Thriving 30, Volume 02: What happens when you visit Portland?
I am all about supporting businesses and in my earlier days, I didn't know any better and wrote many of my reviews on Yelp. Funny thing... I have a post on How to be a Yelp Elite, yet here I am 6 years later telling you to not read my yelp page. Hyperlinks are available, please visit the business and check out their website!
3 Food Spots. One for a different occasion. Be on a lookout for Part 2. Next time they are not food related :)
Pip's Original Doughnuts & Chai (Coffee and Doughnuts)
Getting doughnuts, coffee, and beer in Portland makes you 10X snobbier. My friend LOVES doughnuts and chai so this was a must on our checklist. We were in this line that wrapped around the door, mind you their hours were a little whack, so after a certain time.. they were like "whoops.. looks like you are not getting doughnuts tonight... better luck tomorrow!"
Say no more..
We got the jelly filled lavender, nutella, and the brown sugar. All were delicious, I forget the price, but very affordable not anything that exploded my pupils. My favorite is the lavender berry. Doughnuts are made fresh and on recycle to-go container. Very Portland of Portland.
Breakside Brewery (Drinks)
Definitely my favorite brewery in Portland.
I love outdoor patio seating and romantic christmas lights. My ideal date. Sipping on a beer on cool night, outdoors, some lights. The panties are dropping. BB has it all! Great IPA, diverse menu of bar food. If you are cold, have no fear there's indoor seating too (There's seating by the bar, for you sports fan). Friendly wait staff. Small menu of beer, but great quality beer you don't find in a lot of touristy places. I will definitely come back.
Some recommendations for the owners, put an extra hot sign on the jalapeno poppers, because that was fire. I can eat spicy, but I couldn't even finish one of the poppers on the plate
Screen Door (Brunch)
Fried Chicken, my friends. Get the fried chicken. I mean the waffle is delicious too. But I would just order the fried chicken. Portions are amazing!! Let me tell you this journey before I ramble about fried chicken. We heard manyyyyyyyy reviews, whispers, and rants about this little place called SD. Us Californians have already felt outcasted from the hate that Portlandia was giving us. From shit on the radio to signs on property, we get it, you are not a fan of us. BUT BUT BUT, we are a fan of you, so give us some love man. Anyway, I loved SD. This spot doesn't open until 10:00AM, however there are people lining at 8:00AM!! Who are these people? Californians, I tell you, ME!
The wait was about 1.5 hours, SF brunch wait is usually about the same time. We put our names down, walked around and grabbed coffee. Portland has some damn hipster coffee, with their hipster barista and sh*t... Took instagram photos... we didn't even need a filter because it was that hipster. After an hr and half wait, we were promptly seated. We knew what we wanted. The chicken. We had a party of four girls, We ordered 2 orders of the Chicken and Waffles, 1 Order of (some type of) Eggs Benedict, and Lemon Ricotta Fritters to share. 1 plate of the chicken and waffles wouldve been enough
Chicken and Waffles: I did not care much for the waffles, but damn that chicken was good. Crispy on the outside, but moist as heck on the inside. Juicy, fresh, white meat. The syrup that came along was the perfect consistency, gave it a sweet touch.
I did not care for the benedict, benedict dishes always come off a little heavy to me. But the roasted potatoes that came as a side dish was delicious. You can't fail at making fucking potatoes. The lemon fritters was a great item to share as a snack with the table, since there were about 7-8 pieces with a nice tart dipping sauce.
Prices are extremely affordable, with tips and drinks, we ended up at ~22 per person. I would definitely come back for the chicken. Just the chicken, they can toss the waffle... along the with that attitude/hate for Californians!
