Thriving 30, Volume 06: What happens when you visit Turks and Caicos?
To Pack:
Turks & Caicos is a British Territory that works off 120V and US Currency. You will not need an adaptor or exchange money. Like all international trips, you should always call your credit card company to let them know you will be traveling. You should also bring cash for taxi rides, they do not take credit cards.
Coral Reefs Friendly SPF, since Turks and Caicos is apart of the Caribbean, they are surrounded by beautiful coral reefs that make our habitat better. Some SPF are highly toxic and can hurt our coral reefs, the instructors are extremely strict and will ask you what kind of SPF did you put on this morning. Deet Spray, lawd, have mercy! Mosquitos! If you have sweet juicy blood, you will be attacked. The weather is tropical and extremely humid which attracts all families of Culicomorpha.
To Recognize:
Turks and Caicos was affected by the Hurricane in Puerto Rico, the ride from the airport to wherever you staying is a little sad since you can see all the homes and buildings that were affected by the disaster. The people that are from here are highly sensitive to this and are very fearful of hurricane season.
Everyone is here has the island accent, which I absolutely love. The vibes and the atmosphere is very relaxed and chill. I made friends with the bartender and I asked him if he has been to California, he said he would love to go since he is a Dubs fan, however he thinks we are a little superficial, too fast paced, and caught up in the hustle. Reality doesn’t have to be that difficult. Which in retrospect is so true. This trip gave me time to reflect on my drive on life, goals are important, but I need to wake up and say, damn I’m blessed more often.
To Do:
Snorkeling, I think most resorts offer this for free. You get to see a lot of fishies and turtles. I didn’t get to see much of the coral reefs, I think you'll see that more if you scuba dive. Stand-up Paddling, this was actually much harder than I imagined. The time of day that you do this is also really important, since the current waves are depending on timing of the day. I hear the best time for stand-up paddling boating is from 3:00-4:00pm. Boats traveling beside you can also tip the balance. Yoga on the beach, I tried recording maybe a 9-10 minute video of me doing yoga, but yoga on the sand is really hard. The uneven balance made it really hard to transition between poses. I kept on slipping during my downward dogs. I'll post it on my instagram shortly :)
To Eat:
Turks and Caicos is very tourist and resort heavy, so exploring for food is a little rare. But some island favorites are jerk chicken, rice + black beans and grilled plantains. The jerk chicken are grilled a charcoal grill with an amazing spicy jerk sauce. The rice and beans are buttery and soft. Everything else on the resort was a mediocre. Stick with the chicken and the’plains.
QUICK FACTS:
I think a solid 4 days is good enough, that should give plenty time to explore and relax.
Bring cash for the taxi.
Pack Light.
If you plan to explore outside of the resort, you’ll need to drive or a call taxi. It is not worth it to walk.
A bar that the locals rave about is Danny Boys, you can watch sports there.
